About GRID Alternatives
GRID Alternatives is the country’s largest nonprofit solar installer. GRID is an
entrepreneurial, high-growth non-profit organization that provides renewable energy
and energy efficiency services to low-income families. Through its flagship Solar
Affordable Housing Program, GRID trains and leads teams of volunteers and job
trainees to install solar electric systems for low-income families and affordable housing
providers, providing long-term savings for the people who need them the most. In turn,
low-income families are able to use their long-term savings to pay for basic expenses,
and expand their economic opportunity by employing the skills and training they gained
through GRID’s workforce development programs, in the growing field of solar
installation. GRID’s vision is a successful transition to clean, renewable energy that

Based in Oakland, California, GRID has ten regional offices and affiliates serving all of
California, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Virginia,
Maryland, and Delaware; GRID also has staff on the ground in Nicaragua. GRID has a
dedicated staff of 330 and growing!
About the Bay Area Office:
GRID Alternatives Bay Area leads teams of volunteers and job trainees to install solar
electric systems for low-income families from Santa Clara to Sonoma County, providing
families with needed savings and giving Bay Area workers hands-on experience to
help them find jobs in the green-tech economy. Additionally, the North Coast Tribal
Satellite Office serves rural and tribal members in Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake,
Mendocino, and upper Sonoma counties.
Seeking an experienced electrician, solar, and/or construction professional to lead an
8+ person team installing no-cost solar for low-income families around the Bay Area in
a dynamic and unique non-profit environment.
The candidate must have superior technical, communication and interpersonal skills
and be an excellent people and project manager. Above all else, the candidate must be
committed to the GRID Alternatives mission to serve low-income communities and
while creating a successful transition to clean, renewable energy that includes
Job Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Responsible for all technical and safety aspects of PV installations, ensuring that
all solar installations are installed according to GRID Alternatives safety and quality
• Manage a team of Solar Installation Supervisors, fellows and interns; facilitate
weekly construction department meetings
• Lead installations of PV systems with crews that include volunteers, job trainees,
and employee volunteers of sponsoring organizations
• In coordination with the Bay Area Production Manager, manage monthly and
annual calendar of solar installations
• Assist in designing and engineering small, residential solar electric systems as well
as PV systems for multifamily affordable housing and non-profit organization
buildings; review designs for compliance with GRID Alternatives design standards
• Oversee warehouse organization and equipment purchasing
• Conduct site visits to screen sites for solar access and safety issues
• Train construction staff on core duties as well as process and work flow; train job
seekers and team leader volunteers in PV installation, including administering and
overseeing on-site skill quizzes for GRID’s training certificate program
• Attend to service calls in a timely manner; manage sub contractors when
• Manage fundraising and programmatic deliverables on the job-site including
banners, photos, yard signs, truck branding, etc.
• Lead PV construction for annual large multi-home fundraising and community
engagement event
• Other responsibilities may include hardware store and permit runs, equipment
unloading and loading, answering homeowner and volunteer questions, and
generally participating in activities necessary to make solar happen for low-income
• Job involves both in-office as well as in-field time; reports to Bay Area Production
• Any Director/Manager at GRID Alternatives must be able to advance the

Position Requirements:
• Experienced electrician and/or 4+ years experience in PV system installation,
design, and troubleshooting; must be able to oversee solar installations for
multifamily affordable housing projects
• Excellent management/leadership skills, including the ability to build a positive
work environment and to foster leadership among the team
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work with volunteers and
clients and to speak about the organization’s programs and mission
• Significant project management experience
• Experience leading crews in PV installation (or similar experience)
• Ability to relate to and respect diverse populations; ability to lead and to follow;
proven teamwork experience
• Proficient with computers, including MS Excel and Googledocs; ability to quickly
learn new programs including Salesforce CRM
• Available for occasional weekend and evening work
• Able to travel the greater Bay Area region. GRID Alternatives provides travel
reimbursement and applicant must hold a valid drivers license. Occasional travel to
other GRID offices in California may be required

Preferred Qualifications:
• NABCEP PV Installer Certification
• Experience living and/or working in economically disadvantaged communities and
with diverse populations
• Experience and/or passion with volunteer management
• Experience with Salesforce CRM database
Office Location/travel:
The GRID Alternatives Bay Area office is located in Oakland and requires travel to
sites throughout the office territory and occasional out-of-town travel such as
organization wide yearly staff summit regularly held on California. Availability to work
nights and weekends maybe required. GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work
travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use, but applicant must hold a
valid driver’s license and good driving record.
This is a full-time, exempt position, salary commensurate with experience
Medical, Dental, Vision/Eye care insurance, generous 5 weeks paid time off, up to 10
